BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Thomas Johnson of Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, was commissioned in August 1861 as captain of Company K of the 24th Indiana Volunteer Regiment. Organized under Colonel Alvin P. Hovey, the regiment went to St. Louis, and served in central Missouri until February 1862, when it was ordered to Forts Donelson and Henry.

In March 1862, Johnson resigned to become lieutenant colonel of the 65th Indiana Regiment, organized under John W. Foster. The 65th served mainly in Tennessee under Burnside. From April 1863 until April 1864 the regiment was mounted, forming part of Graham's brigade. After being dismounted, it served under Sherman before Atlanta, and saw action at Resaca de la Palma. Johnson, promoted to colonel in March 1864, was discharged in August 1864 because of failing health.

Johnson's name does not appear in available county histories except in the Civil War connection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains two items. The first is the manuscript of Thomas Johnson's "My War Experiences," written on the first 69 pages of an account book. The second is a bound, typed copy of the account, prepared in 1925 by Johnson's grandson, Major Thomas Johnson Strickler. This is a well organized account, written after the fact, with several endnotes of anecdotal material.
