HISTORICAL SKETCH

In preparation for World War II, in order to provide live fire testing of ammunition, Jefferson Proving Ground was set up in southern Indiana. In 1939-1940 about sixty thousand acres of land were purchased in Ripley, Jennings, and Jefferson Counties. The facility opened in May 1941.

Efforts were made at the time to preserve the history of the affected area. This work was headed by Charles E. Heberhart, Director of the Jefferson County Historical Society. Working in cooperation with Christopher B. Coleman, Secretary of Indiana Historical Society, he gathered information, particularly about the churches and schools in the area. This information is the basis of this collection.
