BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The Pumphrey family settled in Fayette County, Indiana, around 1812. Silas Pumphrey (fl. 1817-1824) married Rachel Mills (fl. 1817-1819), daughter of Levi Mills. Silas and Rachel had at least one son, Levi Mills Reason Pumphrey. According to Silas' letter in SC 1225, he and Rachel also had a daughter. She was born in March 1817, but died the following month.

Barrows states that Silas Pumphrey, Sr., purchased ten acres and laid out a cemetery in Fayette County on 8 October 1851 (p. 544). It is likely that he was the Silas mentioned above.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of two indenture records concerning deeds to land in Ohio County, Virginia, which was owned by the Pumphrey family of Franklin and Fayette Counties, Indiana. (Ohio County became part of West Virginia in 1861 when a portion of Virginia withdrew from that state after its secession.) The 9 April 1819 record is between Silas and Rachel Pumphrey and Abraham Ridgely of Ohio County; the 13 December 1824 record is between Silas and his son, Levi. It was filed in the Fayette County circuit court in June 1826. Also present is a copy the 1824 Indiana divorce law and a mounted albumen print of two unidentified children and a dog. The print is located in Visual Collections.
