HISTORICAL SKETCH

A grocer in Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana, Israel Phalin was mustered into the Sixteenth Indiana Infantry on May 14, 1861 as a Second Lieutenant. After the one year term expired, he reentered the service in a six month position as Captain of Company H Ninety first Indiana regiment on August 24, 1863. Phalin was mustered out at the end of this term.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one letter written by Phalin to O.P. Cobb, a grocer in Aurora, Indiana. Phalin informs Cobb of his regiment's departure to Virginia and complains about the lack of financial support he has received from his friends.
