BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Floyd Thurman, son of William R. and Anna Shrode Thurman, was born March 10, 1837 in Spencer County, Indiana. On July 22, 1861, he was mustered into Company F First Indiana Cavalry. The First fought in the battles of Fredrickstown, Helena, Pine Bluff and in numerous skirmishes. Thurman was discharged September 1864 as a first Sergeant. He returned to Spencer County where in 1875 he married Ellen Gilson.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains two letters, dated October 18th and 27th, 1861, from Thurman to his brother. The letters describe Thurman's involvement in the Battle of Fredrickstown. Transcripts of both letters are included.
