BIOGRAPHiCAL/Historical SKETCH

John A. Abbott (5 November 1839–November 1923) was born in Dearborn County, Indiana. Abbott served in the Civil War as a member of the Thirteenth Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company I. He enlisted in June 1861 and saw action in the Battle of Rich Mountain. After discharge in June 1864, Abbott re-enlisted in the First U.S. Veteran Volunteers, Company B. This regiment formed part of the guard at the hanging of the Lincoln conspirators (7 July 1865).

After the war Abbot studied law in the offices of Harrison and Boone and Harrison in Lebanon. He joined the firm in 1871. In 1873 he became part-owner (with Samuel L. Hamilton) of the Lebanon Patriot newspaper. Abbot was also a business partner with Samuel L. Ralston. He was appointed a circuit court judge in 1888.

Abbott married Laura Williams at Lancaster, Indiana, on 22 March 1868. The union bore five children: Edgar W., Mabel, Gracie, Walter A., and Edith.

The Thirteenth Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized at Indianapolis in May 1861. It mustered out for three years service on 19 June 1861. The regiment was attached to Rosencrans’ Brigade, McClellan’s Army of West Virginia (July 1861).

The First United States Veteran Volunteers was attached to Hancock’s First Veteran Corps. The contingent saw duty in Washington D.C., the Shenandoah Valley, and the Middle Department until July 1866.
