NOTES: |
Due to the volatile nature of nitrate negatives the Cirkut negatives in this collection were digitized. These panoramic views are now available for viewing through the Digital Image Collections on the library website. |
H. P. (Henry) Dexheimer (ca. 1874–2 March 1935) was a photographer and president of Dexheimer Studio, Inc. of Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio. He was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, he lived there until the age of fifteen when he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and studied art for two years. He then went to Hamilton, Ohio and managed a photographic gallery for L. C. Overpeck. From there he moved to Marion, Indiana and opened his own photographic studio from ca. 1890 to ca. 1924. While in Marion he also operated the Marion Vulcanizing Company ca. 1911. He was a member of the Knights of the Maccabees, Marion Tent, no. 22, from ca. 1905 to ca. 1917, and served as an officer of the club, possibly as treasurer, from ca. 1908.
Dexheimer was a member of the Indiana Association of Photographers. While in Marion, he developed a bank of gas lights for use in indoor photography, and was credited with being a pioneer in the use of artificial light for taking indoor pictures. He won many awards for his experiments, among them a gold medal for his lighting process at the 1900 Worlds Fair in Paris.
Dexheimer moved to Indianapolis ca. 1924 and operated a studio out of his home at 923 East 34th Street. In 1926 Dexheimer’s studio was located at Suite 12, Oddfellows Building (northeast corner of Washington and Pennsylvania Streets) in Indianapolis. He opened an additional photography studio in Columbus, Ohio ca. 1926. It was there that he died on 2 March 1935.
Lawrence H. Beitler is believed to have purchased the Dexheimer Studio in Marion, Indiana ca. 1925. He operated photography studios in Marion through the 1950s and died in 1961.

The materials in this collection were found together and processed as one collection because of their close association with each other. The collection contains glass plate negatives, digitized panoramic views from Cirkut negatives, black-and-white photographs, and manuscript and printed material. Most material is related to the career and personal life of Marion, Indiana photographer H. P. Dexheimer. Material related to Marion photographer Lawrence H. Beitler consists of a few photographs, the digitized panoramic views from nitrate Cirkut negatives, advertising posters, and a promotional envelope. The processor divided the material into nine series according to the materials and personal activities of Dexheimer and Beitler. Glass plate negatives are grouped according to size and stored in flip top boxes. Storage Designations and Locations are as follows:

58 Panoramic Images from Cirkut Negatives |
Digitized and located in the Digital Images Collection on library website. |
Series 1–5 includes material created or used by Dexheimer in association with his photographic business. Glass plate negatives made by Dexheimer include unidentified and identified portraits, group portraits of school groups and sports teams, interior and exterior scenes of businesses, Marion, Indiana street scenes, and rural scenes.
Dexheimer’s photographic prints consist of unidentified portraits and two images of homes in Marion. Dexheimer incorporated pictorialist elements in a small number of works (fifteen negatives and three prints) in this collection. Most of these images are portraits of women who are posed in off-the-shoulder dresses of soft, flowing fabric and backgrounds in soft focus. These negatives are stored in boxes 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, and 21. Other pictorialist elements are evident in two photographic prints. An image of a young girl wearing her First Communion dress (Photographs: Box 1, Folder 2) is in soft focus, and shows strong contrasts of light and dark. Dexheimer used natural light to create the image, as the girl poses beside a door. A second example (Photographs: Box 1, Folder 2) shows a child wearing a large hat and a white, flowing dress. The child is in soft focus, and there is little gradation between the dark background and the light-colored subject.
Printed and manuscript material related to Dexheimer’s photographic studio includes a register dating from November 1899 to September 1901. The register lists customer names, negative numbers, accounts paid and received, and descriptions of items ordered. Manuscripts: Box 1, Folder 4 contains notes from Dexheimer’s assistant, Albert Smelser regarding customer transactions. These notes were originally stored in the register, but were removed by the processor for conservation reasons. Other manuscript material related to the Dexheimer Studio includes correspondence with customers and photographic supply houses, including the H. Lieber Company of Indianapolis. Printed material includes invoices and receipts from photographic supply houses in Marion, Indianapolis, and non-Indiana cities. These items date from ca. 1908 to ca. 1911.
Series 6: H. P. Dexheimer, Personal, contains printed and manuscript material relating to Dexheimer’s personal activities. Correspondence in this series includes a letter from Elmer Scott to Dexheimer regarding land development on Blalock Island, Benton County, Washington. Scott, who works for the Westerner Magazine, was attempting to persuade Dexheimer to buy agricultural land. Scott refers to his previous employment in Marion as a “splendid position at Heavy Smith’s Shoe Store.” The letter is dated 22 April 1911. The series also includes bills and receipts from Marion businesses (ca. 1908-1911) and from Masonic lodges (1907-1910).
Records associated with the Knights of the Maccabees are stored with the manuscripts materials and as bound volumes. The bound volumes include a minute book (July 1905-March 1911), member receipt books (1908, 1911, 1917), an account book (1912-1914), correspondence, and business records. The business records include minutes, financial information, and notes regarding elected and deceased members. Business records stored in Manuscripts: Box 1, Folders 31-33 were originally stored in pages of the minute book but the processor removed the items for conservation reasons. The processor also created a folder (Manuscripts: Box 1, Folder 34) for loose material originally enclosed in the account book.
Dexheimer was a member of the Indiana Association of Photographers. Material in this collection consists of Dexheimer’s membership receipt (1909), and a prize list from a 1906 competition.
Series 7–9: Beitler Studio, consists of digitized panoramic views from Cirkut nitrate negatives, photographs and printed material created or accumulated by Lawrence P. Beitler. The photographs are few but the most significant Beitler material is in the panoramic images made between ca. 1917 and ca. 1924. Many of these are signed Beitler Studio. The images include family reunions, church groups, professional and social groups, World War I and Spanish American War army units, and factory workers. Place names associated with these images are from Grant County and include Marion, Gas City, Swayzee, and Sweetser. However there are also images from Amboy in Miami County, Converse in Blackford County, and Urbana in Wabash County. The printed materials relating to the Beitler Studio are seven silk-screened advertising signs and coin cards promoting Beitler’s business.
