NOTES: |
William W. (Wallace) Angel joined the Twelfth Indiana Infantry (Company G) as a first lieutenant at Indianapolis, Indiana, on 15 May 1861. He served one year in the Twelfth Regiment, and mustered out on 19 May 1862. He re-entered the army in August 1862 to serve as a first lieutenant with the Fifth Cavalry (Ninetieth Indiana Regiment). He participated in Morgan’s Raid and Sherman’s March to Atlanta and became a prisoner of war (likely after Stoneman’s surrender at Macon, Georgia) in July 1864. Angel was a member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Post no. 33, Bluffton, Indiana.
The Twelfth Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized at Indianapolis on 11 May 1861 under Colonel John Wallace. The regiment first went to southern Indiana, then back to Indianapolis as a state regiment transferred to the United States Army for the balance of the year. The men marched through Baltimore to Sandy Hook, Maryland, and in July 1861 were assigned to Abercrombie’s Brigade, Army of the Shenandoah. The soldiers camped at Pleasant Valley near Maryland Heights and moved to Williamsport, Maryland, by 13 September. The regiment remained on the Maryland side of the Potomac until March 1862, they then marched to Washington where they mustered out in May 1862.
The Fifth Cavalry (Ninetieth Regiment, Indiana Volunteers) organized at Indianapolis in August and September 1862. Through the course of the war the regiment marched twenty-four hundred miles and participated in twenty-two significant battles and skirmishes. The regiment captured six hundred and forty rebel prisoners. Almost nine hundred officers and men died from wounds, or perished as prisoners of war. The regiment mustered out 16 June 1865 at Indianapolis.

Items in the collection [Angel’s record of service, as recorded on the back of item in Folder One].
Terrell, W. H. H. Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. Indianapolis: W. R. Holloway, State Printer, 1865.
The collection contains eight portraits of William W. Angel, a soldier in the Twelfth Indiana Infantry and Fifth Indiana Cavalry (Ninetieth Indiana Regiment) during the Civil War. These images of Angel include: one tintype, one postcard, one carte de visite, one portrait on porcelain, and one cabinet card. There is also a memorial card, and one military service medal.
Folder 1 contains four items; the carte de visite of Angel as a young man in uniform (ca. 1862), a postcard with two portraits of Angel dated 1861 and 1919, as an old man wearing medals on a GAR memorial card with his record of service in the Civil War and membership in fraternal lodges on the verso, and a casual photograph of Angel on a swing.
Folder 2 contains two formal portraits of Angel.
Folder 3 contains the tintype with Angel and members of the Twelfth Indiana Infantry eating around a campfire. The men pose for the camera, holding plates and cups. One soldier appears to feeding another with a spoon or fork, and another holds a tin cup above a coffee pot. Identifications scratched on the back of the tintype state the photograph was made “On the Potomac, 1861.” The list of names derived from an examination of the tintype under a microscope is as follows: Lieut. Wm. W. Angel; Sargt. Jacob Kenagu [Kenagy, Private according to Terrell]; Corp Nat ?reenfield [Greenfield, Recruit according to Terrell]; Privt Geo Burwell; Jno Campbell [John S. Campbell according to Terrell]; Sanford _arns [Karns, Recruit according to Terrell]; ?; Drummer Gilly [Gilmore Hollingsworth, Musician, Company H?]; Jas St?.
Folder 4 contains a memorial card for Angel.
A portrait of Angel made on porcelain may have been made ca. 1860, as his facial features, hairstyle, and beard color differ little from the image in the ca. 1862 carte de visite. This portrait on porcelain is stored separately from the body of the collection in the glass plate storage area.
The collection also contains Angel’s Civil War service medal inscribed with his name, regiments served, and years of service. For conservation reasons Angel’s medal is stored in the artifact storage area.
