The 16th Indiana Regiment was originally organized for one year of service at Richmond in May 1861. It served in Maryland and in the Shenandoah valley. The regiment was reorganized for three years of service at Indianapolis in May 1862 with Thomas J. Lucas as colonel. Its men came largely from Salem, Rushville, Shelbyville, Connersville, and Terre Haute. Having served briefly in Kentucky, the regiment moved via Cairo and Memphis to participate in the siege of Vicksburg. After the fall of that city in July 1863, the regiment moved south and was stationed on the east bank of the Mississippi to protect shipping. It saw action at Bayou Teche in October 1863.
This collection consists of one item, the muster roll of Captain John N. Thompson of Company B, 16th Indiana, from 30 June to 31 August 1863.
