Historical SKETCH

The Jewish Federation is the modern American extension of the kuppah, or collection box, the traditional community safety net.  In 1895 the Jews of Boston founded the first Federation, later called the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, to combine various relief and welfare groups under one umbrella organization.  The success of this central fund-raising and distribution organization caused the idea to spread, and communities throughout America founded their own federations, first addressing local needs and later, with the crisis in 1930s Europe, coming together to address global Jewish concerns.  Today there are over 200 Jewish federations across America, in nearly every city with a Jewish population greater than 1,000.

The Fort Wayne area is believed to have had a Jewish population since the 1700s.  The first Jewish congregation in Indiana, which would eventually become Congregation Achduth Vesholom, was founded in 1848.  Fort Wayne’s Jewish community continued to grow during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although sometimes-hostile relations between German and Eastern European Jews were an obstacle to community unity.

The Fort Wayne Jewish Federation, like other Federations, was intended to bring together the entire Jewish community.  Founded in 1921 as the Fort Wayne Federation of Jewish Charities, it became the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation in 1936.  The Federation was founded to coordinate fundraising and relief efforts, but has today expanded its mission to fight prejudice, educate about Jewish interests, and strengthen community ties.  The Fort Wayne Federation is a founding agency of the Community Chest, and a member of the United Jewish Communities, a nationwide network of 155 federations and 400 communities.

Materials in the collection

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of approximately five cubic feet of the Federation’s files, the bulk of which are from the 1930s–1950s.  The original order and folder names have been retained.  The collection has been divided into two series; Administrative Records and Casework.

Series 1:  Administrative Records

Series 1, Administrative Records, contains the materials pertaining to the Federation as an institution.  The collection includes bound financial statements, meeting minutes, correspondence, and files on Fort Wayne Jewish organizations.  Two boxes of correspondence from the 1930s provide an overview of the organizations receiving aid from the Federation.

Series 2:  Casework

Series 2, Casework, includes records pertaining to the Federation’s mission of helping Jews in and beyond Northern Indiana.  The nine manuscript boxes of this series contain the records of individuals assisted by the Federation in the 1930s through 1960s.  Most of the cases during and immediately after World War II involved relocation or other assistance to European Jewish refugees, while in the later years the bulk of the caseload was aid to Jewish transients, usually in the form of a few dollars for food and bus fare.  Other community services provided by the Federation include placement in nursing homes or foster care, help with medical care, and mediation of inter-personal disputes.  The transient casework was grouped separately and filed by letter, while the other cases have individual, sometimes numbered, folders.
