NOTES: |
|
Doris McDaniel was born 6 September 1898, the oldest of eight children, to John McDaniel (born 1873) and Katy McDaniel (born 1876) in Morgan County, Ind. A life long teacher, Doris taught Latin, English, and History to high school students in Jackson Township, Clinton County, Ind. and Bean Blossom Township, Monroe County, Ind.. Doris rented a room in a boarding house during the week and would travel to her parents’ house on the weekends; a practice she continued until their deaths in the 1950s. She loved her profession and seldom missed a day of work. She never married, and although she never had any of her own, she loved children and doted on her many nieces and nephews. One of her goals had been to take all of her nieces and nephews to all 50 states, which she never completed, but they did travel through the Midwest and to the Smokey Mountains. After their excursions, they would make scrapbooks about their trip.
In addition to being a teacher, Doris was a business woman and had farm land that her brother farmed for her. After her retirement, she continued to make quilts, garden, and accompany her nephews and nieces on trips. Doris died May 1979 in Martinsville, Ind.

This collection contains 146 valentines sent to Doris McDaniel from the 1920s to the 1970s. Mostly from students, nephews, and nieces, these valentines represent changing tastes, attitudes and styles of the 20th century. The valentines have been organized by time period and type of construction. Three of the valentines are known as “vinegar valentines,” and depict negative characteristics of teachers. These sheets, printed on cheap paper, were given anonymously by students who disfavored the more traditional sentiments adorned with hearts and flowers.
Also included in the collection are personal correspondence to Doris McDaniel; her teacher evaluation from the 1933–34 school year; a newspaper article; and a humorous broadside. Email correspondence from Ms. McDaniel’s nephew, Gregory McDaniel, in which he offers recollections about her life is included with her personal papers; as is a copy of her photograph from the 1955–56 school year at Jackson Township
