NOTES: |
|
Still active, the Indiana Extension Homemakers (IEHA) started in 1913 as Home Economics Clubs developed to aid rural homemakers in increasing their skill levels on everyday tasks. In the early 1950s the names for these clubs changed to Home Demonstration Clubs. This was to reflect on of the club’s goals, to demonstrate to the members of the organization different techniques in a range of activities. Finally, in 1966, Extension Homemakers became the accepted name and it has continued as such.
The individual clubs were supported by both county groups and a statewide organization. There was an extension office at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. From the Purdue office, individuals went out to the counties around the state and taught new ways to do chores at home. With the growth in the number of groups throughout the state this became impossible. Therefore, the counties each received their own officers who would meet members of several of the local groups at the county offices and teach them the lessons. The individuals who attended the instruction would then go back to their groups and demonstrate the methods learned to their fellow club members.
Another important aspect of homemaking clubs were the social implications that these groups had for the women. Since many of the women were mothers, they would bring their children along and they would play while their mothers met. Many of the women in the early years were farm women. They did not have much interaction off of their own farms, so it was quite common for club to be one of the only activities that gave them a social outlet. As the years passed, homemaking clubs expanded into the cities, where it was important to learn many valuable homemaking lessons, including sewing, canning and cooking. All of these were lessons cherished by the rural homemakers, but they also learned different techniques to aid them with their farm work as well.
In 1980, the IEHA began preparation for its 75th Anniversary in 1988. To celebrate this occasion the state club wanted to put together a group of oral histories from members of clubs throughout the state of Indiana. The book inspired a slide tape show that traveled around the state to the different clubs. It also produced six books using the oral histories provided by the women involved in homemaking clubs. The Indiana project sparked a similar project for the national organization. Eleanor Arnold headed both the Indiana and the national projects.

This collection consists of five different series. These series consist of the oral histories, general homemakers information, scrapbooks, Eleanor Arnold information about the project, and visuals. These separations have been created to allow easier access to the collection and the information that resides within the collection.
Series 1: Oral History Interview Transcripts, Releases and Tapes: This series contains the documentation for the oral history interviews done between 1980 and 1989. Included are transcripts of many of the interviews, as well as release forms for most of the participants in the project. Also in this series are 360 cassette tapes that were created throughout the oral history project.
Series 2: General Homemaker Information: This series contains information that was gathered at the time of the oral histories to reflect the Homemakers as a whole. It includes correspondence, lesson plans, record books, yearbooks and other general information. Most information was gathered from the Marion County homemakers but some of the items came from the Knox and Marshall County chapters as well.
Series 3: Scrapbooks: Much like the previous series, this series contains information about some of the different clubs and their activities. This information has been put into scrapbooks by the members of the clubs. Some of the information included is about lessons and samples of the crafts that the homemakers created. There are some photographs in the books as well. There are scrapbooks in the collection from three different Marion County Homemaker or Home Economics Clubs, and from one club in Marshall County.
Series 4: Eleanor Arnold Correspondence and Project Information: This series contains the records kept by Eleanor Arnold, the project coordinator and editor of the books that were written based on the project. Included are the records for the oral histories, the books, and the slide tape shows. The correspondence between Arnold and the different club members and outside participants are also included. Receipts for different aspects of the project are contained within this series as well.
Series 5: Visuals: The visual materials, i.e. print sheets, photographs, negatives, slides and video tape, comprise their own series in this collection. The print sheets and negatives have been divided into the same categories because they reflect each other. They are divided first by date of the print sheet. If there is no date, but instead they have a county name that is associated with the print sheets and negatives, they are then divided by that. Those items that have neither date nor county name are separated into a general section. The photographs are divided by subject being depicted, due to no other apparent order. These are also separated by black and white and color. Slides are ordered first by their “I” numbers. These numbers have been retained but there is no key as to what these “I” numbers pertain. There is no clear order on any of the other slides barring those that are part of the slide tape shows. Those slides have been kept in the order they were in the carousel, and have been separated based on whether they belong to the Indiana show or the National. The last portion of the visual series is a single video tape. This item depicts a program developed by one of the Homemakers groups based on the oral histories.
