BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Avriel Shull (1933–76) of Carmel, Indiana, was an architectural designer, builder, and interior decorator.  A woman of high energy and imagination, Shull designed and supervised construction of homes and apartment buildings mainly in Marion and Hamilton counties from the 1950s until her death in 1976.  She also took responsibility for decorating the interiors of many of these homes.  Shull’s home design plans were sold across the United States and Canada.

Shull was born Avriel Joy Christie in Hamilton County, Indiana.  She graduated from Carmel High School and attended Butler University and the John Herron School of Art.  She opened a commercial art agency in Indianapolis in 1948, and her own architectural design and building firm, “Avriel,” in 1953.  In 1955 the company petitioned the Hamilton County Plan Commission to subdivide the Christie family property at the northeast corner of College Avenue and Road 234. Two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes were constructed on the property, titled “Christie’s Thornhurst Addition,” in the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Through the 1960s and 1970s Avriel Shull designed, built, and decorated homes in a number of Marion County subdivisions.  These developments include: Springmill Estates, Williams Creek Heights, Somerset Hills, Devon Woods, Meridian Hills, Woodbrook Downs, Village Farms, Eden Forest, and Williston Green. Apartments she designed include Somerset Lakes (73rd Street and Keystone Avenue) and a complex at Emerson Way and Ladywood Drive. Shull also designed homes built in Evansville, South Bend, Cool Creek, and Brownsburg, Indiana.

Shull worked with other architectural firms to design a small number of industrial and commercial buildings. The collection includes drawings of the REA Terminal on English Avenue in Indianapolis, the Keystone Square Shopping Center, and the Totem Pole [Drive In] Restaurant. She was also responsible for the design of the Elkins Public Library, Elkins, West Virginia.

Avriel Shull was married to Richard Shull, a columnist employed by the Indianapolis Star newspaper. Two children were born to that union: Bambi (1960) and September (1966).  She was a member of the National Association of Home Builders, the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis, and the Fifth Church of Christ, Science.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains the business records and architectural drawings of “Avriel,” an architectural design and building company in Carmel, Indiana.  “Avriel” was Avriel Shull (1933–76), an architectural designer, builder and interior designer.  Shull designed and drew the plans for the buildings, oversaw their construction, and conceived and coordinated the interior design work.  Hence, these records reflect all aspects of the construction of Avriel buildings, from site survey and preparation to the purchase and installation of interior design features.  Most records concern single-family homes constructed by Avriel, but the collection also includes drawings related to construction of apartment buildings, and commercial and industrial buildings such as the REA warehouse, Keystone Square Shopping Center, the municipal building at Carmel, Indiana, the Totem Pole [Drive In] Restaurant, and the Elkins Public Library, Elkins, West Virginia.

The records include architectural drawings, tracings, and blueprints as well as contracts and permits, correspondence, bills, and invoices.  The architectural drawings date from ca. 1955 to 1976 and include plans to Avriel’s personal residence at 15300 North Meridian Street, Carmel.  Correspondence includes communication with clients, suppliers, attorneys, and government bodies concerning the construction, design, and decoration of Avriel buildings.

The collection is divided into eight series, largely divided between business records and architectural drawings.  The archivist retained much of the original order of the material in Series 1–6.  Not all folders concerning a single client and/or address are filed in close proximity or necessarily within the same series.  Invoices and bills can be found in folders according to client name and/or address, or in files titled “Bills Paid.”  Rough drawings and sketches of interior and exterior design ideas are interspersed through the collection and may be drawn on the back of notes and on pieces of correspondence.  Drawings, tracings, blueprints, and maps related to the information in series 1-4 are stored in flat files and rolled items (see series 7, Drawings, Tracings, Blueprints, Maps).

Printed material in the collection includes brochures and clippings on topics such as fireplaces and solar energy, and publications concerning Hamilton County.  Avriel Shull, and later Richard Shull, sold home design plans through Hudson Home Publications.  The collection contains a number of issues of Hudson publications that contain Avriel designs, including Year ‘round Home Plans, Hudson Home Plans, Home Building and Remodeling, Home Planning & Design, Custom Homes, and others.  The series are as follows:

Series 1: Business Records (ca. 1955–ca. 1965) includes business records, plat maps, plot plans, architectural drawings, tracings, and blueprints related to the development of Christie’s Thornhurst Addition (Hamilton County), Marion County subdivisions, residential homes, and apartment complexes.  These folders are mainly titled according to client names, and/or by the addresses of buildings under construction.  The contents may include permits, contracts, correspondence, drawings, bills, and invoices.  Plat plans, drawings, tracings, and blueprints depict identified and unidentified homes dating from ca. 1954 to ca. 1970.  Material in this series is stored in boxes 1-2, in oversize boxes (OMB 0085), and in flat files.

Series 2: Contracts (1957–72) includes plat maps and contracts related to homes in Christie’s Thornhurst Addition and Marion County subdivisions such as Springmill Hills and Williams Creek Heights.  The series also includes contracts related to private homes built outside subdivisions, and the Ladywood Apartment Complex at Emerson and Ladywood Drive, Indianapolis (ca. 1965).  The series is stored in Boxes 1 and 2.

Series 3: Client Files (1949–ca. 1975) includes files maintained by Avriel Shull concerning individual construction projects.  The folders are titled according to client name and include Shull’s hand-written notes, accounting information, sketches, and correspondence.  Material in this series is stored in boxes 2-6 and in oversize boxes (OMB 0085).

Series 4: Correspondence (1958–75) includes correspondence between Avriel Shull, Richard Shull, and clients, lawyers, contractors, and suppliers.  The correspondence is stored in boxes 6 and 7.

Series 5: Ephemera, Printed Material (1950–76) includes playing cards printed in the 1950s as advertising for Avriel.  This item is stored as an artifact with the number R 2276.  Other material includes obituaries and eulogies to Avriel Shull, copies of the publication Hamilton County Magazine (January, February, June 1976) and the Triennial Atlas & Plat Book of Hamilton County (ca. 1950s).

Series 6: Hudson Home Plans (1973–99). Avriel and later Richard Shull sold plans of Avriel homes through Hudson Home Publications.  Statements of accounts issued between April 1973 and 1994 include the names and addresses of individuals in the United States and Canada who ordered Avriel plans.  These statements are stored in boxes 7–10.  Boxes 11–14 include copies of home design and decorating magazines that include Avriel’s drawings and design ideas.

Series 7: Drawings, Tracings, Blueprints, Maps (ca. 1955-76) includes identified and unidentified items that depict residential structures represented in the business records, as well as homes, apartments, and industrial buildings not reflected in the records.  These sites include the Keystone Square Shopping Center, the REA Building, a concept for an apartment building at Ohio and Meridian Streets in Indianapolis (ca. 1960), the Totem Pole [Drive In] Restaurant, the Somerset Lakes development, and a residential home designed in the shape of a turtle.

Series 8: Personal (ca. 1950s): Includes a portrait titled “Oil Painting of Avriel, by Mother.” Other material consists of drawings in charcoal, possibly made by Avriel when she attended the John Herron School of art in the 1950s.  Material in this series is stored in Flat File drawers 13-h and 14-f.
