historiCAL SKETCH

The Indiana Historical Society awarded the Indiana Broadcasters Pioneers Foundation, Inc., of Carmel, Indiana, a Clio grant in the amount of $25,000 on 17 August 1994.  The grant project was named the Indiana Broadcasters Pioneers Foundation, Inc., Oral History Project. Stephen L. Ingram of the Indiana Broadcasters Pioneers Foundation was the project manager and Linda Weintraut and Jane R. Nolan, public historians from the Indianapolis area, were the project's primary researchers.

The purpose of the grant was to assist with interviews of Indiana's early broadcasters and with the preparation of a book-length manuscript on the state's broadcast pioneers.  The interviews were conducted between 1994 and 1997, and the book was published as "In the Public Interest": Oral Histories of Hoosier Broadcasters, compiled and edited by Linda Weintraut and Jane R. Nolan, with John Warner as assistant editor (Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1999).  The book contains edited  excerpts from the interviews; the collection contains the taped interviews and transcriptions in their entirety.
