The Scenicview Country Club, Inc. was founded in Indianapolis during the fall 1971. According to its bylaws, the purpose of the organization was to encourage and promote educational, cultural, and athletic pursuits with family involvement. The club, founded and operated by African Americans, was situated on a 70-acre tract of land at 6601 Grandview Drive. The Indianapolis Sportsman’s Club previously owned the property. It was operated with a board of directors. Early board members included Ernest Davis, Rocky Fanning, Richard Head, Jr., Larry Liggett, Aubrey Love, Donald Oldham, Guy Russell, Joseph Slash, Riley Smith, Joseph Summers, Clifford Wilson, and Ruby Woodson. Payton R. Wells served as a paid general manager.
Scenicview Country Club sponsored many social and sports activities including dinner dancing, travelogues, Weight Watchers, arts and crafts programs, checkers, modern dancing, volley ball, karate, archery, and golf. The activities of the country club were regularly reported in the Indianapolis Recorder and Jean Jensen’s “Every Tuesday” column in the Indianapolis News.
