Mary E. J. and Fritz Schaefer operated the Schaefer Frame Manufacturing Company in Indianapolis. Fritz (1888–1980) was a native of Wiesbaden, Germany. He graduated from Cologne University before immigrating to the United States in 1922. He came to Indianapolis and began working in the framing factory of H. Lieber and Company. In 1923, Fritz and Mary (d. 1980) were married.
After the Lieber factory closed (ca. 1939), the Schaefers founded their own company. The company is listed in Polk's Indianapolis City Directory until 1958. The Schaefers were members of the Portfolio Club from 1956 to 1980.

This collection consists of two diaries and a scrapbook belonging to Mary E. J. Schaefer. The first diary is entitled "Our Wedding Trip." It was originally written in 1923, and this copy was presented to Fritz Schaefer on his 36th birthday the following year. A label from the 18th Indiana Artists Exhibition (1925) at the John Herron Art Institute was laid into the diary. Fritz Schaefer is listed as the artist; the title of the artwork is Santa Maria.
The 1928 diary and scrapbook detail Mary Schaefer's trip to France, Germany and Holland (January–July 1928), which included a visit to Fritz's family in Wiesbaden. The diary records Mary's impressions and activities, while the scrapbook contains photographs, postcards, telegrams, programs, and other mementos. A telegram and a photograph of an unidentified man were laid into the scrapbook. These are located in folder 3.
