The first German Methodist preacher to arrive in Indianapolis was Rev. Louis Nippert. The first minister assigned to Indianapolis by the bishop in Cincinnati was Conrad Muth who arrived in 1849 and organized the first church in June 1850. The cornerstone for the German Methodist was laid in July 1869, with Gottlob Trefz as pastor of the 210-member congregation. The German Methodist Church was absorbed by the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church in September 1933.

The collection consists of items found in the building's cornerstone box. Items discovered in the box include a copy of the church's history in German with an English translation dating from the 1960s. Also included in the collection is a German calendar, 1869, and publications regarding the German Methodist Church, 1864, 1866. The cornerstone box also contained German and English language newspapers from Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and New York City.
