BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Betty (Scales) Barteau (b. 1935) was born in Boonville, Indiana (Warrick Co.).  She attended Indiana University Law School at Indianapolis, graduating with an L.L.B. in 1965.  She was admitted to the Indiana Bar that same year.  Barteau served as Boonville City Judge, Deputy Prosecutor in Spencer and Warrick Counties, and Warrick County Attorney.  She had a general law practice in Marion County from 1969 to 1974, before becoming a Marion County Superior Court Judge in 1975.  She has served as a judge on the Indiana Court of Appeals, Fifth District, since 1 January 1991.  Barteau has held memberships in various professional and community organizations, and has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work in both areas.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of research material collected by Judge Betty Barteau for her work “Thirty Years of the Journey of Indiana’s Women Judges, 1964–1994” as published in the Indiana Law Review (Vol. 30, No. 1, 1997).  These files contain completed questionnaires (with biographical information on judges who participated), questionnaire results, draft versions of Barteau’s article, notes, and photocopied research articles.  Also present are miscellaneous correspondence and a copy of the issue of the Indiana Law Review that includes Barteau’s article.
