BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Edward Jaquelin Bennett (1893-1975) was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the son of a prosperous manufacturer of cast iron heating stoves and insurance company president, Henry W. Bennett. In 1914, Edward graduated from Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co.). Throughout his life he was an entrepreneur, bank director, and businessman. He inherited his father's stove business, Indianapolis Stove Company, and owned it until the family business was sold in 1951. Edward started a solenoid valve manufacturing business, Atkomatic Value Company, in 1942. He retired in 1963.

He was a member of the University Club, the Woodstock Club, and the Dramatic Club (M 646, Dramatic Club Records). Edward was elected to membership in the Indianapolis Literary Club on 28 November 1997 and was an active member until late in his life. He read eleven essays at the club, many of which were murder mysteries.

Edward and his wife, France H., had three sons: Henry W., Charles H., and Edward J., Jr.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of research materials and manuscripts of Edward J. Bennett's mysteries and papers delivered to the Indianapolis Literary Club. Seven of the stories in this collection were included in Murder Most Foul and Other Grisly Tales, which was compiled and published by his son, Henry W. Bennett in December 1995. A copy of Murder Most Foul is present.

Research materials for Bennett's story, "The Cold Spring Murder," include a copy of The Cold Spring Tragedy, which describes a murder that took place in Cold Spring, Indiana (Dearborn Co.) in 1868. There are seven photostat copies of newspaper articles concerning the murder. Another story, "Belle Gunness," was based on events that took place in LaPorte, Indiana.

The collection also contains another paper by Bennett entitled "Arthur Schopenhauer" and a memorial to Evans Woollen, Jr., which might have been authored by Bennett.
