NOTES:
John R. (Jack) Costello (fl. 1952-1993) was a native of Stratford, Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Navy before attending Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (Tippecanoe Co.). After graduating in 1952, Costello worked as a forester in the Illinois Department of Conservation for 14 years. He joined the Indiana Department of Natural (formerly known as the Department of Conservation) Resources in 1967, and became Deputy Director of the department in 1971.
Donald Eugene Foltz was born in 1924 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in 1946, and received a Masters of Education from the University of Maryland in 1955. He married Jean (Uran) in 1953, and has two children. Foltz served as an infantry lieutenant during the Korean War. He was an Indiana State Representative (1955-1961) and House Majority Leader in 1959. After resigning from the House of Representatives in 1961, he devoted his time to farming in Vermillion Couty . In 1961, he became the Director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He left in 1965 and became involved in business and banking.
Glory-June Greiff (b. 1948) graduated from Butler University and worked for several years in radio as an on-air personality and producer. She became involved in historic preservation and research in the 1980s and ultimately became a consulting historian, earning a Masters in Public History from Indiana University in 1992. Among her publications are Art Deco in Indianapolis (1980), Public Schools and the Neighborhood Life-Cycle (1985), and numerous articles, especially on the New Deal and park history.
Louis D. Hasenstab, Sr. (b. 1916) was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana (Clark Co.) to Margaret Louise (Hoagland) and Benjamin E. Smith. After his parents divorced, his mother married John P. Hasenstab. He attended public schools in Jeffersonville and Richmond, Indiana (Wayne Co.). After graduating from Jeffersonville High School, Hasenstab returned to Richmond, and worked as a clerk in a grocery store.
In 1937, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was assigned to the 19th Artillery, Battery A. Hasenstab was discharged in 1940, but was called into active duty from 1941 to 1944. He attended Butler University from 1946 to 1951. He then worked for the Department of Conservation, Division of State Parks, as the Supervisor of Recreation. He served as Assistant Director of the Division of State Parks from 1977 to his retirement in 1984.
Malcolm Carrell Heaton was born in 1925 in Bloomfield, Indiana (Greene Co.). He attended public schools in Bloomfield. Heaton was hired as a draftsman/artist by the Indiana Department of Conservation in 1945. He eventually became art director for the department and acting editor of Outdoor Indiana.
Gerald Jerry Pagac (b. 1946) was a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended Wisconsin State University-Whitewater (now University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) and the University of Oregon. In 1972, Pagac became a Recreation Research Technician in the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Outdoor Recreation. He served as director of that division from 1977 until becoming the Director of the Division of State Parks in 1990.
Patrick Robert Ralston (b. 1948) is the son of George Avery and Stephane Catherine Ralston of Terre Haute. He attended Indiana State University. Ralston married Nancy Carol (Price), and has two children. He was the Director of Parks and Recreation in Butler, Indiana (Dekalb Co.) from 1973 to 1974, Regional Supervisor of Indiana State Parks (1974-79), and Supervisor of Parks, Recreation, and Cemeteries in Terre Haute (1978-1989). In 1989, Ralston became the Director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

This collection contains a 189-page photocopied manuscript of Glory-June Greiff's "People, Parks, and Perceptions: Eighty Years of Indiana State Parks," which traces the history of Indiana state parks. Also included are six oral history typescripts conducted as part of Greiff's research. Interviewees include: John R. (Jack) Costello, Donald Eugene Foltz, Malcolm Carrell Heaton, Louis D. Hasenstab, Sr., Gerald Jerry Pagac, and Patrick Robert Ralston. They discuss their respective personal histories and their work with the Department of Natural Resources (Department of Conservation).
The oral history typescripts follow the manuscript, and are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's name.
