SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one manuscript box of material, mostly pertaining to Sarah P. Zeigler, her life and activities. Originally stored as a scrapbook, the order of the collection has been altered. Folder 1 contains a small amount of correspondence. There is a 1953 letter from the Hoosier Motor Club apprising School #42 officials of awards bestowed upon Sarah Zeigler and one of her art students for the student's poster contest entry, "Wear White after Dark." There are several photographs of Zeigler, alone and with others. They are in folders 2-5 and 24. Zeigler starred as "Gloria" in what appears to have been a stage production. Photographs of Zeigler (identified as Sarah Olive) and other cast members are in folder 5. Olive may have been an earlier married name, as two photographs in folder 26 are inscribed "to Mrs. Olive."

Sarah Zeigler was civic minded and very active in social affairs. Her name and/or picture often appeared in the newspaper. There are several newspaper articles that reference her in folder 7. Evidence of her activities is demonstrated by her association with many organizations including the Senate Avenue Young Men's Christian Association (folders 14 and 15), Indianapolis Chapter Frontiers of America (folder 19) and a Debuntante Ball Program (folder 12). There is a certificate honoring her husband's family's early ties to the Disciples of Christ religious denomination in Indiana in folder 10. A tintype of Zeigler's mother, Lillie Alexander Parham, is in folder 11. Materials related to the Indianapolis Public Schools are in folders 16-18. Sarah Zeigler travelled extensively. There are several images of historic sites in folder 20. They include George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, Arlington National Cemetery, and aerial views of Washington, D. C. and the Potomac River.

Eleanor Roosevelt visited Indianapolis in December, 1953, under the auspices of the Senate Avenue Young Men's Christian Association Monster Meetings. Delivering a message, "The United Nations and You," she spoke at the Murat Temple on 13 December 1953. Folder 22 includes a copy of the program autographed by Eleanor Roosevelt and notes from Roosevelt's speech--possibly written by Sarah Zeigler. There are several photographs of Eleanor Roosevelt with others (including Zeigler) surrounding this event in folder 23. Newsclippings pertaining to Roosevelt, mostly regarding the United Nation speech are in folder 25. After her 1953 visit to Indianapolis, Eleanor Roosevelt responded to a letter from Sarah Zeigler. Roosevelt's letter is in folder 25.

There are several folders of newsclippings in the collection. Of particular note are Indiana personalities (folder 28) and social groups (folder 29).
