BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Hester Blanche Childs (17 July 1909--7 October 1987) was born in Duncan, Mississippi. She lived in Indianapolis most of her life. Employed as a nurse, she was affiliated with the National Federation of Licensed Pratical Nurses, Inc. Childs was active in numerous civic and social organizations. She was program chairman of the Old Settler's Club and a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Council of Negro Women--Indianapolis Section.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection contains materials pertaining to Hester B. Childs and other family members including her mother Minnie B. Ward, step-father Willie Ward, uncle John Biggs, sister Rosie Lee Carr and nephew Constance D. Carr. It also highlights her activities in different clubs and oganizations. The collection is comprised of one manuscript box.

Folders 1-5 contain Child's personal materials including correspondence, her autograph book and photographs. Folders 6-12 consist of family information which includes photographs and funeral records. An extensive visual representation of the family home located at 1122 W. 27th Street Indianapolis, Indiana is in folders 13-27. The last half of box 1 emphasizes her social and civic activities. Folders 28-35 contain a Mt. Zion Baptist Church bulletin and plate. The plate is dated 1872-1955. The dates appear to conmemmorate the location(s) of the church prior to it moving to its current location on North Boulevard. The plate contains images of the church building and the pastor in 1955. Also, there is a photo album of the National Federation of Licensed Pratical Nurses, Inc. convention, and materials pertaining to Childs membership with the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Metros Booster Club. Folders 36-43 include obituaries, sympathy cards, a photo album, and identified and unidentified photographs of individuals. The Box concludes with identified and unidentified wedding photographs along with a wedding napkin and program. There are photographs of a trip to the Bahamas and a 1978 edition of The Forty-Two Herald, a newsletter pertaining to Indianapolis Public School # 42.
