HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Commission on the Status of Women in Indiana was a non-profit state government organization established in 1973 by Governor Otis R. Bowen. Its purpose was to make sure that women would have full opportunity to serve as equal citizens of the state of Indiana. The Commission sought to further equal opportunities for women, eliminate sex discrimination, provide council, and encourage women to assume more initiative.


SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection, which spans the years 1973-1979, is contained in two manuscript boxes and is arranged chronologically. There are extensive records about the Commission's activities for the years 1973 and 1977. These Records include minutes, correspondence, committee information, laws, regulations, newsletters, and workshop information. There are also records from the 1978 Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) Project Planning Committee as well as some miscellaneous Commission information.
