The Neal-Marshall Alumni Club was organized in 1977 out of the office of George Taliafero, Special Assistant to the president of Indiana University (I.U.). The club was named to honor the earliest African-American male and female graduates of I.U. Marcellus Neal graduated in 1895 and Frances Marshall Eagleson received an AB in English in 1919. As stated by its constitution, the club's purpose is:
To provide a means for the association of I.U. alumni and friends. To advance
the interests and promote the welfare of Indiana University. To develop a black
agenda for addressing the pressing needs of black students, alumni, faculty, and
staff of Indiana University. To promote awareness of the black legacy, traditions,
and history of Indiana University.
The major emphasis of the club has been the sponsoring of an annual reunion and development efforts for the establishment of a Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center on the Bloomington campus. The first reunion was held at the Fourwinds Hotel and Marina, south of Bloomington, Indiana in July 1978. Subsequent reunions have been hosted in other cities, however most of the reunions have been in Bloomington.

The Neal-Marshall Alumni Club Collection consists of three manuscript boxes of material that date from 1977-1983. Box 1 contains the club's constitution, general correspondence, and Reunion and Executive committees' minutes. Most of the correspondence and minutes pertain to the club's annual reunion. Box 2 contains correspondence, specifically responses from Indiana University alumni to a 1978 reunion questionnaire. The responses (folders 1-6) are divided by the alumni's decade of graduation. Information about registration for the 1978 and 1981 reunions is in folders 7-16. Financial records are in folders 17-23. Folder 24 contains biographical information in various formats pertaining to numerous Indiana University African-American alumni. Lists of I.U. alumni complete box 2 and are in folders 1-5 of box 3. The remainder of box 3 includes newsclippings, newsletters, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular note is a proposal (folder 9) for a new building to be called the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center to replace a student center currently located at 109 N. Jordan Avenue on the Bloomington campus.
