John Carr was born on Fayette County, Pennsylvania and moved to Clark County, Indiana in 1806. He fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and was a lieutenant in a company of U. S. Rangers charged with the defense of the western frontier, 1812. John Carr later became a major general in the Indiana Militia. A Jacksonian Democrat, Carr served as Clark County Clerk, 1824-1830, and was a presidential elector for the Jackson/Calhoun ticket, 1824. He was also elected to the U. S. House of Representatives from Indiana in 1831, and served as a member of Congress for six years.
Andrew Jackson (A. J.) Carr was born in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana, and attended Hanover College and Indiana Asbury (DePauw) University and studied law. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 3rd Indiana Volunteer Regiment during the Mexican War. A member of the Democratic Party, Carr was elected to the Indiana House of Representative in 1859, and served one term in the legislature. He also served as Clark County Treasurer for four years. Carr married Sarah Whiteman in 1851, and they later produced four children.
