Historical SKETCH

Dusch Drug Store was established in 1885 by Gabriel Dusch, Sr., a licensed pharmacist, in Tell City, Indiana.  He was later joined in the operation by his wife, Mary Louise Stadler Dusch, who also became a licensed pharmacist.  In addition to the traditional drug store filling of prescriptions, Dusch and many other pharmacies sold family recipes for a particular ailment or disease.  These recipes were handed down from generation to generation.  The drug store prospered until the 1930s when competition started its decline and it continued on the downward trend when Mr. Dusch died in 1938.  Mrs. Dusch continued the pharmacy until her death in 1957, at which time the store was closed.  The Dusch's were also involved in other business ventures.  These included Gabriel's Laboratories, which produced and sold veterinary products from around the 1880s to the 1960s, and the Tell City Outdoor Advertising Company, which provided billboard advertising in the Tell City area from 1895 until 1956.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of the collection consists of six folders of photocopies of the store's formulary (formulae) books listing detailed remedies and cures for various illnesses.  Most of these were handwritten, though some were published copies.  There is also a narrative of the family and the businesses by Charles Schreiber written in February 1989, and some clippings about the family and the business.  In addition, there is a small amount of advertising and general items about Gabriel's Laboratories.
