BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Dr. James Brooks Slaughter (1792-1833) was born in Nelson County, Kentucky. He graduated from Transylvania University. In 1813 he moved to Corydon, Indiana. The following year he married Delilah Spencer; this union was blessed with six issue. Slaughter was elected county coroner in 1814, and in 1822 served as an ensign in the Fifth regiment of the Indiana Militia. He served in the lower house of the Indiana General Assembly in 1817-1819 and in 1826-1831, and as a state senator in 1820-1824. He died of Asiatic cholera.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection, filling one manuscript box, and covering the period 1815-1832, contains one folder of legal documents involving Dr. Slaughter, and two of his account books.

The legal documents concerning Dr. Slaughter include the report of a committee on a proposed road, and several suits regarding promissory notes, including one in which Slaughter accuses his debtor of "contriving fraudulently intending craftily subtly to deceive and defraud said plaintiff."

One small day book, covering the years 1817-1832, contains charges against various patients, including some for a considerable amount of whisky, and, toward the end, a Specific for Cholera.

A larger account books covers the year 1817-1830.

These records are among the earliest for a doctor in Indiana.
