The Alpha Latreian Club was founded in Indianapolis in 1924 as a service organization made up of college-educated women. In 1929 the club began raising funds for the Julia Jameson Nutrition Camp. The camp, run by the Marion County Tuberculosis Association, provided recreation for undernourished, ill, or handicapped children. The club raised funds by sponsoring annual skating parties until 1950, when they began sponsoring productions at the Civic Theater instead. The Alpha Latreian Club is a member of the Indiana Federation of Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and is still an active organization.
This collection, filling two manuscript boxes, contains minutes and other club records, programs, and correspondence, dated 1924-1989. Box 1 contains minutes for almost the entire period of the club's existence up to 1989, with a ten-year gap from 1932-1933 to 1942-1943. Minutes are for the club year of October to June, with no meetings in the summer months. In Box 2, Folders 1-3 contain treasurer's records for 1924-1925 to 1937-1938, 1940-1941 to 1955-1956, and 1982-1983 to 1988-1989. These include attendance records and lists of dues-paying members as well as records of expenditures and funds raised for the Jameson camp. In Folder 4 is the only correspondence in the collection, that with the Jameson camp. It discusses donations made by the club, progress of building at the camp, and joint programs sponsored by the two organizations, 1929-1988. In Folders 5-7 are brief histories of the club, constitutions, and bylaws. In Folder 8 are clippings, and BV 2655 and OM 294 contain scrapbooks about club activities. Folders 11-13 contain a complete run of club programs, giving dates and places of meetings, and lists of officers, committees, and members.
