BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Willard Ellis Harold (1902-1988) was born in Lafayette, Indiana. His father was a physician who died of tuberculosis two years after his son's birth. Willard lived with several different relatives in central Indiana while his mother worked in Canada. After attending high school in Noblesville, Indiana, Harold went to work on a ranch 700 miles northwest of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for two years (1920-1922). While working in Canada, Harold furthered his education by taking correspondence school classes. After returning from Canada, he worked for the Prestolite Company in Indianapolis for a short period of time. In 1923 Harold enrolled at the Cleveland Advertising Club's Advertising School at the recommendation of his uncle, Emmett W. Rutledge, who was also in the advertising business in that city. After completion of the course, Harold joined the Henry Packer (later Central) Outdoor Advertising Company where he worked as a representative in Cleveland, Richmond, Indiana, Chicago, and Cincinnati.

In 1942 Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was assigned as a supply officer for a fighter squadron that was stationed in England, France, Belgium, and Germany, 1943-1945. Also in 1943, Willard Harold married Alma Barmes of Los Angeles. After the war, Harold returned to Central Advertising, but he left in 1946 and formed his own outdoor advertising company in Newark, Ohio, with the assistance of his wife. The Harolds continued to run their advertising company until their retirement around 1967.

Harold was an avid golfer and involved in several charitable organizations as well as serving as an officer in the Lions and Rotary Clubs.

Alma Barmes Harold (1906-1983) was born in Los Angles, California and was a legal secretary for the chief counsel of the Automobile Club of Southern California prior to her marriage to Willard Harold. She later assisted her husband in his advertising business.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains the diaries and papers of Willard E. Harold, and the correspondence and papers of his wife, Alma, and his parents, Mae Rutledge Harold and Dr. Henry E. Harold. Among the Mae and Henry Harold materials are the correspondence from Mae to Henry prior to their marriage, and letters to Mae from friends and relatives in Westfield, Noblesville, Lafayette, and Indianapolis, 1897-1910. There are also the medical school records, physician patient accounts, insurance policies, and personal finances for Dr. Harold, 1890-1904.

Willard Harold's correspondence includes letters from his mother in Saskatchewan, Canada, and California, and from friends and relatives, living in Indiana, Ohio, and California, 1905-1941, regarding general personal subjects and family matters while he was attending school and living with relatives in Noblesville, Westfield, Brownsburg, and Fort Wayne, and while he was working in Canada, Cleveland, Ohio, and Richmond, Indiana. There are also personal business correspondence, records and examinations from the correspondence classes Harold took in Canada, 1920-1923, fiction and travel articles submitted for publication, and general correspondence from friends and relatives, 1950-1988. Additional items include prize ribbons from animal contests in Hamilton County, Indiana, in the 1920s.

There are also papers from Harold's career in advertising with the Packer and Central Advertising companies, 1923-1943. Included are correspondence with clients and other company employees, published materials, contracts, legal statements, company newsletters, and company stock reports. In addition, there are class notes and exercise from the Cleveland Advertising School, which Harold attended in 1923.

The collection also contains Harold's World War II Army Air Corps papers and printed materials, 1942-1945. Among the items are orders and memos, class notes, examinations, and publications, lecture notes, and course outlines and from OCS (Officer Candidate School) and other training classes in Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and New York. Also, reports, orders, correspondence, published regulations and procedures, and manuals from his duties as supply officer for the 48th Fighter Squadron stationed in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. There also Squadron reunion materials from the 1970s and 1980s as well as the squadron's newsletter from the same period. Also included in the collection are military insignia for American, British, and German forces and foreign currency Harold collected while overseas.

Also included are Willard Harold's letters to Alma Barmes Harold, 1930-1945. Most are of a romantic and personal nature with most being written while Willard Harold was in military service, 1942-1945. During his assignment in Europe, he wrote almost daily of his activities, although very little personal war information is contained because of censorship. There are also other correspondence and papers of Alma Barmes and family in California, 1914-1952.

The largest portions of the collection are 74 daily diaries kept by Willard Harold from 1915 (as a youth) and 1920-1988. In these volumes, Harold describes in great detail his daily activities, events in the news such as politics, economics, and sports, personal opinions of individuals and events, and thoughts and feelings. Subjects included are advertising (clients, contracts, employers, and fellow workers), military experiences (training camp and the war in Europe), home and family life, vacations, and other leisure activities. These are often very candid.

The collection also contains a significant number of photographs including those from the Harold, Barmes, and related families including family, 1860s-1980s. There also are photographs taken by Willard Harold of his vacations and various daily life images, 1920s-1960s, as well as his World War II related photographs, 1944-1980, and his advertising billboard photographs, 1930s-1960s.
