NOTES:
The Davis family, represented in this collection first by John Davis and then by Robert Davis, lived first in Shearmen's Valley, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and then moved to Rush County, Indiana, about 1820. There are indications that John Davis, who married his wife Jemima in 1780, was a wheelwright, and that Robert Davis made chairs.
The collection consists mainly of receipts for notes and taxes, along with one deed and some agreements. The collection fills six folders, and is arranged chronologically. The first document in the collection, dated 9-16-1776, is a pass for John Davis to go from Perth Amboy, N.J., to Pennsylvania; it is signed by Clement Biddle, Deputy Quartermaster General. Among the undated documents is an inventory of the estate of Jemima Davis.
