HISTORICAL SKETCH

An attorney, scientist, educator, and writer, Dr. Lee Ellen Ford was born Leola Ellen Ford in 1917 at Auburn (DeKalb County), Indiana. She earned her B.S. from Wittenberg University (Ohio) in 1947, her M.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1949, and her PhD. from Iowa State University in 1952, specializing in cytogenetics and botany. She also attended the Ohio State University briefly in the late 1940s. In 1969 Dr. Ford switched careers and entered law school at the University of Notre Dame, from which she received her J.D. degree in 1972.

Dr. Ford began her teaching career as an associate professor of biology at Gustavus Adolphus College from 1950-1951, followed by positions at Anderson (Indiana) College, 1952-1955; visiting professor of biology at the University of Alberta (Canada), 1955-1956; associate professor of biology at Pacific Lutheran University (Washington), 1956-1962; and professor of biology and cytogenetics at Mississippi State College for Women, 1962-1964. She was also on the faculty at Carson College (Nevada), 1965-1968, and Dominican College (New York), 1970. During her teaching career, Dr. Ford also served as the chief cytogeneticist for the Pacific Northwest Research Foundation (Seattle, Washington), 1964-1965, director of the Canine Genetics Consultation Service (Parkland, Washington), 1963-1969, sponsor and one of the principal movers for the Companion Collie for Adult Jr. Blind, 1955-1965, and director of the Genetics Research Laboratory, Auburn, Indiana, 1955-1975. She has published over 1,000 volumes on dog genetics and the breeding of guide dogs for the blind and has contributed articles on cytogenetics to journals in the field and has written articles for the American Kennel Club Gazette and other dog and cat magazines. Her areas of research expertise included illnesses in dogs such as hip disorders and epilepsy, chromosome studies in dogs (especially grey collies) and rabbits, and testicular tissue in humans. In later years she was active in the legal rights for animals and their owners.

In addition to her teaching duties at Carson College, Dr. Ford also held the position of economist for the Manpower program in Nevada, 1966-1968. In 1969 she accepted the job of director of the Institute for Basic Research in Mental Retardation in Staten Island, New York. She left this position a short time later to pursue a legal career.

Ford was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1972 and accepted a position as executive assistant to Governor Otis Bowen the following year. Bowen became acquainted with Dr. Ford during her law school days when she assisted him while he was Speaker of the House in the Indiana Legislature by writing several position papers. While in the Bowen administration, Ford was responsible for minority rights issues with particular concentration on equal opportunities for women and the handicapped. Upon leaving the state government, Ford returned to DeKalb County, to practice law, specializing in the rights of the handicapped and other minorities.
