The 44th Indiana Infantry (1861-1865) was organized in the Tenth Congressional District and rendezvoused at Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana in October, 1861. In December, the regiment left for Henderson, Kentucky. It camped at Calhoun, KY, until February, 1862, when it was transferred to Fort Henry. The 44th Indiana moved to Fort Donaldson and participated in the siege of the fort, suffering considerable loss in killed and wounded. It was engaged during both days at the battle of Shiloh. Serving throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, the regiment fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Mission Ridge. It was assigned provost duty at Chattanooga, Tennessee before being mustered out in September, 1865.

This collection consists of the records (1861-1938) of the 44th Indiana Regiment Association. The association was comprised of surviving members of the regiment. The records include company rosters; regiment histories; correspondence (mostly relating to attendance at reunions); financial papers; reunion invitations and programs; speeches (probably delivered at reunions); regiment reunion badges, many of which include pictures of individuals who served with the 44th Indiana; and a copy of ACME Songs for the Grand Army of the Republic. Material is arranged chronologically within each folder.
Also present is a scrapbook (1895-1938), which includes newspaper clippings, photographs, reunion invitations and programs, rosters, financial accounts, and memorials. Pasted into the scrapbook is a copy of a booklet entitled Souvenir of the Dedication of the Indiana Monuments on Shiloh National Military Park. Visual materials include a photograph album with pictures of the association during a 1903 trip to the Battlefield of Shiloh, two mounted photographs (one is of 14 Union officers, probably with the 44th Indiana), and Decoration Day postcards. Miscellaneous items include typescripts of letters written by Albert S. Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Ulysses S. Grant, concerning the Battle of Shiloh; a resolution adopted by the association stating its support of the United States remaining neutral during World War II and the association’s opposition to communism; and typescripts of tablet inscriptions on Indiana monuments on Shiloh National Military Park.
