NOTES: |
Charles Owen McCormick, son of John and Pauline McCormick, was born in Monitor, Tippecanoe County, Indiana on February 9, 1886. He received his A.B., magna cum laude from Indiana University in 1911 and his M.D. from Harvard in 1913. After completing his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital and Boston Lying-in Hospital, McCormick returned to Indiana in 1916 to enter private practice in obstetrics and gynecology. He also joined the faculty of the Indiana University Medical School in 1916 and remained in that position for 38 years before becoming a professor emeritus in 1954. He continued his private practice after 1954. During his career, McCormick wrote many articles and one book, Pathology of Labor, Puerperium and the Newborn, (St. Louis: The C.V. Mosby Company, 1944, 1947). He was also a member of many medical associations, a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the first president of the Indianapolis Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served on staff at William H. Coleman Hospital for Women and Methodist, St. Francis, and Indianapolis Community hospitals. An active Unitarian, golfer, and Rotary member, Charles McCormick and his wife Elizabeth had two sons, Charles Owen and Gene Elton. He died on December 30, 1957 in Indianapolis.

The Charles Owen McCormick Papers consists of five bound notebooks and two loose-leaf notebooks. The materials in the loose-leaf notebook have been removed and placed in folders. The materials are filed chronologically per the original order.
The first bound notebook (BV 2093) contains papers from an English class and notes from science classes (Zoology and Physics) from 1907 to 1909. The other four bound notebooks (BV 2094, BV 2095, BV 2096, BV 2097) are entitled Freshman and Sophomore Medic Notes, Indiana University and date from 1909 to 1911. The notebooks contain class notes, laboratory notes, and scientific drawings from medical classes McCormick took while pursuing his A.B. at Indiana University. The folders contain notes from a senior obstetrics class taught by Dr. McCormick in 1939. The notes, "Pathology of Labor, Puerperium and the Newborn" were the basis for McCormick's book published in 1944. A journal article entitled "Clinical Course of Pyelitis in Pregnancy" can be found at the end of the obstetric lecture notes and a 1941 obstetrics examination can also be found in the papers. The last two folders in the papers are letter, book reviews, and transcripts of both dating from 1944-1948 describing the public and medical reaction to the publication of McCormick's two editions of Pathology of Labor, Puerperium and the Newborn.
