BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Anton Scherrer (1878–1960) was the son of Swiss born architect, Adolph Scherrer, the architect of the present Indiana State House.  Anton Scherrer, along with his brother, Herman, followed their father in architectural endeavors under the firm of Adolph Scherrer and Sons.

In addition to his architectural career, Anton Scherrer wrote a newspaper column on the people and history of Indianapolis titled “Our Town” for the Indianapolis Times.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection centers on Anton Scherrer’s newspaper columns.  These items include the manuscripts he wrote for the Times’ “Our Town” articles, April 1936–Dec. 1940, the notebooks he used in comprising the information for the columns, and correspondence he received suggesting ideas for his columns.  There also are two scrapbooks containing his printed columns, 1937–40.

Other material in the collection includes manuscripts of speeches and essays and architectural sketches for unidentified houses.
