SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The bulk of the collection consists of letters from Ralph and Carl Carmichael while in the military during World War II to their parents and other family members in Freetown, Indiana, 1942-1945. Ralph served with the Army's Medical Battalion and writes from training camps in Mississippi and Tennessee and from assignments in England, France, and Germany. Carl Carmichael served with the Signal Company of the Army Air Corps and writes from training facilities in Illinois and Texas and from assignments in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Topics in both sets of letters include army life and conditions, war news and other current events, and discussion about home and family life. Carl Carmichael also sent seven photographs interfiled with his letters of 17 October 1944 and 19 February 1945 and three pieces of paper money issued by the Japanese during their occupation of the Philippines, interfiled with his letter of 18 January 1945.
