BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Augustus Mortimer Van Dyke (1838–1918) was born in Ohio but moved to Princeton (Gibson County) Indiana, in 1860 where he was an attorney. In 1861 he enlisted in the 14th Indiana Regiment, part of the Army of the Potomac, as a first sergeant.  Van Dyke was later promoted to 2nd lieutenant of the same regiment in February 1862 and eventually became a 1st lieutenant.  In 1864 Van Dyke was named assistant adjutant general for the 4th Division, 15th Corps, Army of the Tennessee.  After the war, Van Dyke attempted to establish a business in Nashville, Tennessee, but he eventually returned to Indiana and settled with his family in Ripley County, where he died in 1918.
