George May (1772-1857) was born on Virginia of German parentage. In 1805 he married Nancy Beeks (d. 1843), and they had twelve children. About 1811 the family moved to Ohio. May served under William Henry Harrison at the battles of Tippecanoe and the Thames, and apparently moved to Indiana after the War of 1812. Documents in the collection seem to place him in Washington County in 1818-1819, and in Fountain County in 1831. In 1837 he moved to Bartholomew County and settled in Section 1 of Clay Township.
May was a miller by trade, and also dealt in horses and hogs. One son made a point of having been brought up in poverty. The family members were Methodists.

This collection, filling one manuscript box, contains notes, receipts, and legal papers dating 1799-1831. It is arranged chronologically.
Most of the items concern George May or his apparent partner, Joseph Blackburn. Some unusual items are promises to pay, not money, but a horse and a "barren cow." Several receipts are for execution of judgments against May. Some receipts are for horses and hogs.
