The Pierian Study Club was founded in 1926 "to study literature and drama and to encourage an interchange of thought by papers and discourse and to promote original work and expression." Membership was limited to twenty active members, and this meant that each member had to do something each year, since meetings were scheduled monthly from October through June. Dues were set at a dollar a year, and the club constitution provided that expenses should not outstrip the treasury.
Most members were married, and apparently most had jobs. Geographically most members lived on the north and east sides of Indianapolis, though there were a few from Southport and Franklin.
At first the club's programs were literary, with one speaker on current literature and another on some classic work, with discussion afterward. In later years programs were designed around themes like South America, U. S. history, and travel. Each year there was a President's Dinner, and also a picnic, sometimes with a program.
Through the years the club's meetings became less frequent, dwindling to four a year and then to three. The club was disbanded in 1993.
This collection, filling two manuscript boxes, contains minutes, yearbooks, and historical recollections from the years 1926-1993. It is arranged chronologically within category.
In Box 1, Folders 1-9 contain historical material, the most detailed of which is a series of recollections done in 1951 for the club's twenty-fifth anniversary. In Folders 11-16 is a complete series of yearbooks, 1926-1993. A complete set of minutes is contained in Folders 17-18 of Box 1 and in Box 2.
