HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Kiefer-Stewart Company, a wholesale drug firm in Indianapolis, came into being in 1915 with the merger of two seventy-year-old firms, the A. Kiefer Drug Company and the Daniel Stewart Company.

During the next sixty years the company was headed by members of the Stewart and Kiefer families: William Scott (1915-1922); G. Barret Moxley (1922-1955); A. Kiefer Mayer (1955-1960); and B. Scott and David Moxley (1960-1975). For many years the company operated at Capitol and Georgia Streets; about 1965 it moved to 1515 Senate Avenue. It served all of Indiana, about a third of downstate Illinois, and part of Ohio. In addition to its drug business, Kiefer-Stewart also had a separate Liquor and Wine Department.

Though it was doing about $14 million in business yearly, the company stopped paying dividends in 1972, and operated at a loss of almost $500,000 in 1974-1975.

In June-September 1975, Kiefer-Stewart was bought by the Henry B. Gilpin Company of Washington, D. C., a firm with annual sales of about $60 million. It was then merged with Mooney-Mueller-Ward, another Indianapolis firm that Gilpin had bought in 1974.
