position to accept command of the 22nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry
Regiment. On 17 August, the 22nd

division at the Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Atlantic campaign and a corps on the
March-to-the-Sea in the Carolina campaign; and participation in the Modoc War
following the murder of General Edward Canby in 1873. His career was marred
