Phineas Pickett (1850-1932) was born in Randolph County, Indiana, and moved with his parents, Joseph and Sarah to Howard County, Indiana, in 1855. Pickett taught school in Howard County from 1871-1874 and later was engaged in farming near Poplar Grove. In 1875 he married his first wife, Evangeline, who died a short time later. In 1879 Pickett married Harriet Kerr and in the early 1890s they moved to a farm near Plainfield in Hendricks County, Indiana. Pickett was a devout member of the Society of Friends.

The collection contains papers and correspondence of Pickett and his family. Materials includes Joseph and Sarah Pickett's marriage licensee (photostat), 1849, their warrantee deed to property in Howard County, 1860, and a railway pass for the Indianapolis, Peru, and Chicago, Railroad, 1868. Also included are Phineas Pickett's teaching licenses and examinations for Howard and Cass counties, correspondence with relatives in Glasgow, New York; Quakerville, Kansas; and Winchester, Jericho, and Plainfield, Indiana, 1882-1903. Phineas Pickett's business papers contain materials regarding renting property in Hendricks County, 1893; his insurance policy with the German Baptist Tri-County Protective Association, 1899-1902; tax receipts, 1903-1904; an agreement with the interurban Chicago & Northern Indiana Railway Company of Indianapolis for right of way through Pickett's farm in Irwin Township, Howard County, 1904; and several letters to Indiana colleges regarding the donation of his books on the Society of Friends to their institutions, 1920. The collections also contains Pickett's copies of the Western Friend, 1879-1890 (volumes 1-11), a Society of Friends monthly journal printed in Baxter Springs, Quakervale and Varck, Kansas.
