Prominent individuals in the family papers include Elihu Stout (17861860), John Francis Bayard (17861853) and Henry S. Cauthorn (18281905). Elihu Stout was a printer and publisher in Vincennes, Knox County, (180445). He published Indiana's first newspaper, the Indiana Gazette (180406) and the Western Sun (180745). John Francis Bayard was an officer in the French army under Napoleon and a Vincennes businessman (182053). Henry S. Cauthorn was Stout's grandson and Bayard's son-in-law who studied at Indiana Asbury University (DePauw) from 184548 and a Vincennes attorney, 18511905. Cauthorn also served in the Indiana House of Representatives (187181) as a member of the Democratic Party and held numerous city and county offices.

The collection includes Elihu Stout's receipts, accounts and other documents relating to his publishing and personal business (180551) and materials submitted to him for publication. John Bayard's papers contain business documents (181948) and letters from his family in Grenoble, France (182233, 1849), and letters from his son, Samuel Bayard, in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, to his mother in Vincennes (185662). Henry S. Cauthorn's material includes correspondence with his friends from Indiana Asbury University (184650), correspondence regarding his Vincennes business interests, correspondence regarding state Democratic Party politics and the Indiana state legislature (186080), and his diary (1870). Other materials in the collection include receipts and legal documents of French inhabitants of Vincennes (17801810), and an unpublished biography of Elihu Stout by Valerie Knerr (1953).
