BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Clarence Aden Dryden (1880–1965) was born in Scott County, Indiana, the son of William Russell and Margaret Catherine (Hinds) Dryden.  He graduated from Hanover College in 1904, and in the same year married Sarah Wallace Lewis, daughter of James Franklin and Mary (Pilling) Lewis of Dupont, IN.

The Dryden’s homesteaded in Oregon, but later returned to Indiana, where Dryden was a partner in a road-building firm.

In 1934 Dryden joined the board of trustees of Hanover College, and in 1960 he was secretary of the board.  He was much interested in local history and in 1948 he became president of the Jefferson County Historical Society.  In 1950 he was appointed to a state commission to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Indiana Territory.  He became vice president of Indiana Historical Society in 1961, and was on the board of the Society of Indiana Pioneers.
