Barbara Zimmer (Mrs. Karl R.) earned an A. B. degree at the University of Chicago in 1949 and an A. M. at Butler University in 1970. She has been on the board of the League of Women Voters (president 1973-1975), the Indiana Congress on Education, and the YWCA. Since 1979 she has been a member of the English department at IUPUI, and in 1985-1986 she was a staff writer for the Indiana Department of Education. She is president of the Indiana Women's History Archives. She was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1983.
This collection, filling one small manuscript box, contains correspondence, drafts and finished reports, memos, and programs, from the period 1969; 1980-1991. The material is arranged chronologically. Most of the material deals in one form or another with public school education in Indiana.
In Folder 1 are three letters, 1969, from Kate C. Greenough generally concerned with the history of the League of Women Voters. In Folder 2 are materials regarding "The Squeeze," a 1981 project of the League of Women Voters funded by Lilly Endowment, aimed at promoting better understanding of the public schools. In Folder 3 is a 1983 booklet, "What Can We Do About The Public Schools," produced by the Indiana Committee on the Humanities. In Folder 4 are papers 1983-86 relating to the League of Women Voters' involvement in the Indiana Congress on Education.
Folders 5-6 contain 1984 long-range planning materials of the national and local League of Women Voters.
In Folders 7-8 are materials on Schooling for the Future produced by the Indiana Board of Education in 1986 when Zimmer was working there.
Folders 9 and 11 contain material on 1986 and 1987 conferences on Indiana Schooling for the 21st Century, sponsored by the Indiana Board of Education.
In Folder 10 are 1987 materials about the Indiana Congress on Education, and in Folder 12 is a letter to State Superintendent H. Dean Evans about a 1991 report, VISION 91.
