Joseph McDaniel Anderson served in the "C" Company, 50th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. A resident of Salem, Washington County, Indiana, Anderson enrolled as a First Sergeant on October 25, 1861, in Laconia, Harrison County, Indiana. He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant on September 8, 1862, and later promoted to Captain. He was paid extra for supplying his own clothing and equipment. The 50th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers was first organized at Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana on September 12, 1861. Recruits came from Jackson, Lawrence, Washington, Orange, and Floyd Counties and formed 10 companies. They served along the line of the Louisville and Nashville railroad, in Jackson and Memphis, Tennessee, and in Little Rock, Arkansas. During their service, they fought in battles at Edgefield Junction and Parker's Crossroads. They were consolidated with the 52nd Regiment and finally mustered out of service at Little Rock on December 31, 1864.

Report of W. H. H. Terrell, the Adjutant General, Indiana. Vol. II, pp. 495, 500-501; Vol V, p.494.
The Papers of Joseph McDaniel Anderson consist of a Civil War muster roll and a scrapbook of newspaper articles dating from 1861 to 1864. The muster roll, dated from December 31, 1863, to February 29, 1964, lists Anderson, First Lieutenant, and all of the soldiers under his command during that period. Information from the donor and materials in the collection suggest that Anderson carried and added to the scrapbook during his service in the 50th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. It contains many different types of newspaper articles such as poems, short stories, funny stories and jokes, illustrations of home life, commentaries on the war from Southern, Northern, and European sources, descriptions of the battles at Valverde, Shiloh, Corinth, Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, and an article on the killing of Major General Nelson by Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis. Most of the articles are undated and do not list sources, but excerpts of news articles can be found from the following papers: Chicago Tribune, Cincinnati Gazette, Cleveland Plaindealer, Knoxville Register, London Times, Louisville Journal, Memphis Appeal, Mobile Register, Montgomery Mail, Nashville Banner, Nashville Union, New Orleans Bulletin, New Orleans Crescent, New Orleans Picayune, New York Mercury, New York Times, New York World, Petersburg Express, Richmond Examiner, Richmond Whig, St. Louis Republican, Vicksburg Whig, and the Waverly Magazine.
