BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Daniel Winthrop Noble (1808 - ca 1890) was born in Lanesboro, Mass., but moved with his family to Genesee County, N. Y., in 1815. He ran bookstores in Whiteford, Mich. (1834-1836), Boston, Mass. (1837-1840), and Dayton, Ohio (1840-1848). In 1848 he moved to Indianapolis and opened a book and stationery store there. Six years later he sold out, and settled on a farm in Perry Township, Marion County, where he lived until his demise.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection consists of one account book, with entries from 1849 to 1890, covering both Noble's bookstore and his farm. The bookstore entries (pages 1-132), mainly for 1849 and 1850, show that Noble did some business on a sort of barter basis. The left column shows purchases at the store; the right column shows payments made either in cash or in goods and services. Most of the farm entries (pages 133-239) have receipts from sales on one page, and expenses on the opposite page. Some pages have accounts for different members of the Noble family.
