Information obtained from the collection materials.
This collection contains two folders. In the first folder is the scrapbook that was kept by Lewis Bennett Raper. The second folder has loose materials from that scrapbook.
In the scrapbook are a number of clippings from different newspapers about Navy life, ships, recreation within the Navy, and World War I. Also, the scrapbook contains a number of programs and photographs that show some pieces of what life in the Navy would be like and what opportunities were available. Some of these materials were programs for performances, menus, schedules of programs, and a copy of the Kentucky Budget which was a small newsletter for the sailors.
Another important part of the contents is the certificate of transfer from being an active sailor to being part of the Navy Reserves. This document contains quite a bit of information about Mr. Raper’s military career.
