John Foster was a Union soldier from Indiana stationed near Fredericksburg in May 1862.

This is a letter from John Foster of the Union Army to Miss Ann Crom. He is writing her on 26 May 1862 about a mile from Fredericksburg, Virginia. It is a personal letter describing the difference between Virginia and “old Indiana.” He mentions a parade in honor of a visiting Abraham Lincoln (“uncle abe”) and that he had recently completed a 100 mile march.
