This letter was written by Samuel Bain of the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on 3 May 1863 at Patomac Creek, Virginia to his brother.  The letter goes over some personal details, such as what to do with his money in case he should be killed, but discusses the events around the Battle of Chancellorsville.  He describes a cavalry raid that went within a few miles of Richmond, though he was not on the mission.  He also gives his perspective on the Battle of Chancellorsville and why he thought it was a victory.
