William Harper was born in Indiana around 1834. In 1861 he was living in Nottingham, Wells County, Indiana, when he enlisted in Company A of the 47th Indiana Regiment. Harper was mustered out of the regiment as a sergeant on 23 October 1865. In 1880 he and his wife, Lidia, were living in Indianapolis where he was working as a cooper.

The collection contains a letter written by Harper with the 47th Indiana at “Knew Madrid” [New Madrid], Missouri to his wife, Lidia, in Wells County, Indiana, 16 March 1862. In his letter he tells of the regiment’s engagement at New Madrid and the storming of Fort Thompson.
